Abstract: It’s common to use the indwelling catheter in the course of clinical diagnosis and treatment. However, there are some potential safety problems in indwelling urethral catheter, such as catheter associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI) caused by indwelling catheter is the most common iatrogenic infection,70–80% of health care acquired infections are attributable to use of an indwelling urethral catheter. In addition, urethral injury, bleeding, edema and other complications may also occur in indwelling catheter. This article reviewed the potential safety hazard of catheter in the process of catheterization, maintenance and removal. In order to provide standardized safety management countermeasures for indwelling urethral catheter, ensure the safety and effectiveness of indwelling catheter, and improve the quality of nursing care.
