Matthias D Hofer, MD

Matthias D Hofer is an attending surgeon and assistant professor in the Department of Urology at Northwestern University in Chicago, IL. He graduated from the University of Ulm in Ulm, Germany, as medical doctor in May 2002 and received his doctorate in medicine characterizing a protein, MTA1, involved in cancer progression and metastasis in July of the same year. Thereafter Dr. Hofer began his Urology training at the University Hospital of Ulm. He interrupted his training for a research fellowship at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital/Harvard Medical School in Boston where his work focused on biomarkers of prostate cancer progression. After three years and wanting to pursue a career as physician-scientist he completed a residency in anatomic pathology also at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital. After graduating in 2009 and driven by the desire to return to his original passion of urology, Dr. Hofer started his urology residency training at Northwestern University in Chicago and graduated in 2016. He subsequently completed a fellowship specializing in urologic reconstruction, trauma and prosthetics at UT Southwestern in Dallas after which he returned to Northwestern University in 2016 as attending urologist.

Dr. Hofer has authored over 75 peer-reviewed publications and his current research interests are now in wound healing, specifically of urethral injuries, and factors modulating scar formation. For this, he pursues a translational approach using a combination of animal experiments and molecular biology techniques as well as clinical patient data to not only study the mechanisms but also their clinical significance and applicability for treatment at the same time.
