Objective: To assess the efficiency and safety of robot-assisted laparoscopic radical prostatectomy (RLRP) and to compare it with retropubic radical prostatectomy (RRP) as treatment for localized prostate cancer.

Methods: The clinical data of 31 patients who underwent radical prostatectomy between March 2006 and December 2010 were retrospectively analyzed. 5 cases had RLRP and 26 cases had RRP. Indexes of operative time, blood loss, postoperative recovery of intestinal function, hospitalization and perioperative complications between the two groups were compared.

Rusults: Mean operative time and time of pelvic drainage showed that there is not any statistical diference between two groups (P>0.05). In the RLRP group, oparative blood loss, recovery time of intestinal function, hospital stay and postoperative eomplication rate were better than those in the RRP group (P<0.05).

Conclusions: Compared with RRP, the RLRP is a effective minimally invasive technique with less trauma, better recovery and lower morbidity. It is worth to be used in clinical practice.
