Testicular cancer is the most common solid tumor in young adult men and the incidence is increasing across most parts of the world. Although the overall incidence to mortality ratio is very favorable, successful oncologic outcomes require a careful understanding of stage and risk-dependent management strategies, as well as knowledge regarding the appropriate integration of surgical and systemic therapies. Furthermore, a greater understanding of immediate and long-term side effects to different therapeutic modalities has in part been responsible for a renewed focus towards minimizing the therapeutic burden required to maintain high cure rates while sparing patients the associated intermediate and long-term sequelae of cancer-directed therapies.
A comprehensive approach to treating patients with testis cancer requires a collaborative group of medical professionals spanning various disciplines. This focused issue on testicular cancer addresses some of the most current concepts in multidisciplinary care. Invited experts in the field of testicular cancer address numerous topics including; radiographic studies for diagnosis and staging, fertility considerations and testis preservation strategies, high-risk features in men with stage I tumors, current stage-dependent therapeutic concepts for patients with seminoma and non-seminoma germ cell tumors as well as uncommon testis cancer histologies, minimally invasive surgical strategies as well as multidisciplinary concepts in the post-chemotherapy and surgical-salvage settings, and minimally invasive methods to manage postoperative lymphatic leaks.
