Purpose: To explore the effect of long- term enhanced external counterpulsation (EECP) on structure of penile corpus cavernosum in porcine with hypercholesterolemia.

Materials and Methods: Twelve male infant pigs were randomly divided into 2 groups according to treatment: the hypercholesterolemic control group (n=6) and the hypercholesterolemic + EECP group (n=6). After having performed EECP for 36 hours on the hypercholesterolemic + EECP group (n=6), we collected the sections from penile corpus cavernosum of every pigs and sorted the sections in sequence according to their morphology of endothelial cells, hyperplasia of fibroblasts and smooth muscle cells.

Results: The pathological sequence of hypercholesterolemic +EECP group was obviously lower compared with that of the hypercholesterolemic control group (P<0.05).

Conclusions: Long- term EECP may protect peni le corpus cavernosum f rom the damage resulting f rom hypercholesterolemias.
