Dr. Stephen J. Freedland is director of the Center for Integrated Research in Cancer and Lifestyle and co-director of the Cancer Prevention and Control Program and Associate Director for Faculty Development at the Cedars-Sinai Samuel Oschin Comprehensive Cancer Institute. He also is a professor in the Division of Urology, Department of Surgery at Cedars-Sinai in Los Angeles, CA, USA and holds a staff physician appointment at the Durham Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Durham, NC, USA. He has served on numerous American Urological Association guideline panels for prostate cancer and two prostate cancer guideline panels for the American Society of Clinical Oncology, including one he co-chaired. Dr. Freedland earned his medical degree from the University of California, Davis, CA, USA and completed a residency in Urology at UCLA and a fellowship in urological oncology at Johns Hopkins. Before joining Cedars-Sinai, Dr. Freedland was on faculty at Duke University where he was an associate professor with tenure in the Division of Urology, Department of Surgery and Department of Pathology.
Dr. Freedland’s clinical expertise focuses on benign prostatic hyperplasia and prostate cancer. His focuses on treating the whole patient, not just the disease, by combining traditional Western medicine with complementary holistic interventions. His research interests include the role of diet, lifestyle and obesity in prostate cancer, prostate cancer health disparities, and prostate cancer risk stratification.
Dr. Freedland has published over 560 articles, and his research has appeared multiple times in JAMA, Journal of the National Cancer Institute, Journal of Clinical Oncology, European Urology, and The Journal of Urology, among many others. Dr. Freedland is an active reviewer for more than 50 peer-reviewed journals. He sits on the editorial board for Cancer Prevention Research, European Urology, International Journal of Urology, and Nature Reviews Urology, and is editor-in-chief of Prostate Cancer and Prostatic Disease.
